What's Wrong With Angry?
Monday 2 - Saturday 7 July, doors 7.15pm, performance starts at 7.45pm
By Patrick Wilde
Directed by Ali Carroll
‘School’s out, so is Steven’
This thought-provoking play is set in a time when the
Age of Consent for homosexuals was 21 (5 years older than heterosexuals), and legislation called ‘
Section 28’ prohibited schools and local authorities from depicting homosexual relationships as an acceptable view of family life. The central character, Steven Carter is 16, still at school, and gay.
By engaging in any sexual activity Steven is breaking the law, but his heterosexual peers at school are not.
Steven is in turmoil, bullied and victimized by his peers, frightened of rejection from his family and threatened by the law.
The one person he could speak to, who might be able to help, is a gay teacher; but he is gagged by Section 28 and afraid to talk to Steven.
Steven is angry. What’s wrong with that?
